Having made the patient comfortable as outlined already, the next step is to treat the cause

The vast majority of SBO will settle with careful monitoring as they are caused by adhesions which trying to deal with surgically (adhesionolysis) can lead to the formation of more adhesions

Monitoring will involve rehydrating & recording all fluids in and out

The patient is kept nil per mouth (NPO) until the bowel has resumed function

Other causes must be dealt with accordingly eg incarcerated hernias must be repaired removal of foreign bodies etc
